Cette conférence célèbre la sortie d’un livre remarquable paru avant la Covid : Voice Quality: The Laryngeal Articulator Model (Cambridge University Press, 2019). Le professeur John ESLING et son équipe y font une description détaillée et très utile du larynx. Que ce soit pour décrire finement les accents dans diverses langues, les chants tibétains, les chants de gorge, certains sons propres à la langue arabe ou à des dialectes du chinois (entre autres), cette recherche est à la fois fascinante, novatrice et extrêmement convaincante pour comprendre comment l’on articule une langue. De nombreux exemples sont donnés, incluant les sons produits par les très jeunes enfants (enfant = qui ne parle pas), ainsi que de nombreux problèmes médicaux traités par la chirurgie. Une langue est ainsi nommée à cause de l’organe principal d’articulation (la langue), mais voici qu’avec des moyens technologiques très avancés la face cachée de « la langue » nous est révélée. Cette conférence sera suivie d’une célébration en l’honneur de John ESLING et co-auteurs, dont Allison BENNER qui sera présente.

This lecture celebrates the release of a remarkable book published before Covid: Voice Quality: The Laryngeal Articulator Model (Cambridge University Press, 2019). Professor John ESLING and his team provide a detailed and very useful description of the larynx. Whether describing the different accents in various languages, Tibetan chants, throat singing, certain sounds specific to the Arabic language or Chinese dialects (among others), this research is fascinating, innovative, and extremely compelling in helping us understand how we articulate language. Numerous examples are given, with particular attention given to the sounds produced by infants (in-fans = who do not speak), as well as many medical problems treated by surgery. A language is called “a tongue” for a good reason, but now, with highly advanced technology, the hidden side of “tongues” is revealed to us. This lecture will be followed by a celebration in honor of John ESLING and co-authors, including Allison BENNER, who will be present.
